Another jovial crowd enjoyed a varied programme in our annual Proms Night Spectacular in Symphony Hall on December 1st. In a break from tradition, we were also joined by The Phoenix Singers based in Leek, Staffordshire, Birmingham Law Society Choir, Chorus of the Orchestra of St. John and Worcester Fesitval Chorus. They joined us for a number of items including John Williams’ Hymn to The Fallen and the final movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, ‘Ode to Joy.’
It was a special night for the BPSO as we enter our 30th Birthday celebrations. Founder Alex Roe on behalf of the whole Orchestra received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) 2018, often referred to as the equivalent of an MBE for volunteer groups.
The QAVS crystal and certificate were presented to the orchestra by Lord Lieutenant Sir Algernon Heber-Percy and Jenny Wynn, Deputy Lieutenant of Shropshire. Whilst this very public style of presentation was unusual, it was highly appropriate that loyal supporters of the orchestra shared the collaborative success and recognition with us, for they too effectively provide additional voluntary
support when purchasing concert tickets.
